Mission

Emilie's mission became that of all Sisters of Providence, which is to proclaim Providence as the loving presence of God, watchful over the created universe, attentive to the needs of all, active in and through us. We also proclaim the compassion of Mary, Mother of Sorrows, by our compassionate love of the poor. | ||

Emilie did this first with elderly women, a group that was neglected in the middle of the 19th century. Soon, other groups of persons experienced her loving, compassionate attention - cholera and typhus victims and others who were sick, orphans, mentally ill persons, prisoners… |

For us as Sisters
of Providence and Providence Associates,
who are the poor? They are those persons and groups whose basic needs are not met; the victims of injustice, especially the rejected, the marginalized, the voiceless. Thus our challenge is to be the "human face of Providence" where needs call us, by a compassionate, liberating action, nourished by contemplative prayer, in union with Mary, our Mother of Sorrows.
