A group of Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows, Montreal.

Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows and deaf friends.

Founded in 1851, the work with young deaf women responded to an urgent social need in the second half of the 19th century. The religious community of the Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows developed from this early work of teaching deaf girls.

When some of the young deaf women, who lived at the Institution for the Deaf, wished to become sisters as a result of the inspiration and guidance of Chanoine F-X Trépanier, chaplain at the Institution, the Sisters of Providence proceeded with the establishment of a Novitiate at the Institute, in 1887.

This diocesan community comes under the authority of the Sisters of Providence, and whose superior general is also their superior general. The ministry of this small group of Sisters is oriented towards deaf and hard of hearing persons.
