The "Comuna Providencia" - Santiago, Chile

Because the Sisters of Providence have left their footprints in Chile, many symbols bear witness to their presence.

Comuna Providencia today gives testimony to a strong and vibrant synthesis of progress, commerce, and modernity.  In 1854, the Sisters of Providence settled in this place.  It was a farming area (chacra) known as Chacra Lo Chacón. Little by little, it became populated and a broad street was eventually opened and given the name Providencia, a name it has retained to this day. Over the years, the area has expanded and it currently belongs to larger region called Comuna Providencia.

The Comuna has two beautiful churches. One of them is a parish church called 'Iglesia de la Divina Providencia'. (Church of Divine Providence) It stands on the very spot where the sisters settled in 1854. (Photograph of a plate)

The other, built between 1882 and 1890, when Mother Bernarda was the Superior, belongs to the Congregation. (Pictures of the church inside and outside). In 1953, in an auspicious contest organized by the municipality of Providencia, the Congregation won First Prize, thanks to the repairs and conservation of the church building, which had been severely damaged by the 1985 earthquake.
