TIMELINE
The Sisters of Providence, an international, multicultural and intergenerational congregation
The fabric of our history, as Sisters of Providence, is rich and guarantees of an inspiring future. It was woven, in the course of time, by the adherence to the Providence mission of thousands of women, from diverse origins, all faithful to the legacy transmitted to them by Émilie Tavernier Gamelin.
In the course of the last years, the Congregation has continued its restructuring with the merger of the American North West provinces (Sacred Heart and Saint Ignatius) forming Mother Joseph province in 2000, and that of the Eastern Canadian provinces (Émilie, Élisabeth and Notre Dame) and the Providence Infirmary Sector which became Émilie Gamelin province, on June 1st, 2005. Moreover, numerous missions continue to have new prospects (please see above – Societies in turmoil).
In order to provide the congregation with a genuine International Centre which reflects the image of the congregation of today – international, multicultural and intergenerational – renovation work was initiated on March 22nd, 2004 at 12 005 Grenet Street in Montreal (address of the General Administration). The official opening and blessing ceremony of the International Centre took place on March 7th, 2005, and the inauguration of the glass artwork “Providence” located in the main entrance of the Centre took place on June 15th, 2007.
In a single breath, the 2007 General Chapter invites us to rediscover the meaning and the pertinence of the Providence charism throughout the world and to work in favour of justice, by eliminating the root causes of poverty. More than ever, the Sisters of Providence demonstrate their trust in Providence, by strongly reaffirming their promise to pursue their Mission, resolutely committed to the world of today.
